James 1:23-24 - For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
Have you ever told one of your children do as I say and not as I do? I know I have on numerous occasions. It doesn't work well in child rearing just as it doesn't work out well in life. People watch what we do to see how it aligns with what we say we believe. We often have a set of ideals and expectations of others that we do not live up to ourselves.
In this scripture James is saying when we hear the word but do not follow what it teaches it is as though we looked in the mirror to see if we are presentable and then left and forgot to fix what was out of place.
This is why in James 2:26 "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." We can say we have faith but until we apply it and put it in action it is dead.
Did you know Enron had a values statement that claimed integrity was one of their core values? I think we can all agree they didn't walk that out very well in their actions. Their integrity was a nice idea that was never realized because when the rubber hit the road it really did not mean that much to them.
What are the values and beliefs we say we hold that we could do a better job living out in our lives? Kids are watching, spouses are watching, co-workers are watching, the world is watching. Every day we all preach a sermon with our lives, what is the sermon your life is preaching?
